Kuwait Guide
Named after the word "kut" meaning
"fort" in Arabic, Kuwait was established by settlers coming from the inland
regions of the Arabic Peninsula in early 18th century. Today it is the capital of the
country of the same name which is the richest country in the Middle East in spite of its
small surface area.
Fishing, pearl fishery and trade had always been the
customary livelihood in Kuwait, until after World War Two when good fortune knocked its
door and it became the favorite area for the petroleum companies. Before that Kuwait had
lived under the rule of Arabs, Ottomans and British respectively.
Being the most important center of commerce and finance
in the Middle East thanks to its modern office buildings, skyscrapers and hotels, Kuwait
suffered a deep pain during the Gulf War in 1990, but recuperated soon. Now its parks,
gardens and wide boulevards are as lively as ever.
Having a semi-tropic climate, Kuwait's summers and
winters have a considerable difference of temperature. Precipitation is almost zero in the
summer, but the rich green fields of the city underlines its determined struggle against
the climatic conditions.
